Washing Machine Not Spinning or Draining? A Harare Troubleshooting Guide

Washing machine with standing water in the drum and warning symbol, showing a spin or drainage problem

A washing machine that refuses to spin or drain is one of the most common repair calls we receive across Harare. One moment the machine is running normally; the next, the drum has stopped, water is sitting in the tub, and your clothes are soaking wet. Before you panic, there are a few straightforward checks you can carry out yourself — and clear signs that tell you when it is time to call a technician.

Is it a spin problem or a drain problem?

These two faults often appear together but they are not the same thing. If water remains inside the drum after the cycle, the machine has a draining problem. If the drum is empty but the clothes are still very wet, the machine has a spinning problem. Sometimes a blocked drain prevents the machine from reaching the spin cycle at all, so fixing the drain fault resolves both symptoms. Identifying which came first helps narrow down the cause.

Five things to check before calling a technician

  1. Door or lid latch. Most machines will not spin if the door or lid is not fully closed and latched. Check that nothing is caught in the seal and that the latch clicks firmly into place.
  2. Load balance. An unevenly distributed load causes the drum to vibrate excessively. The machine's safety system will stop the spin cycle to protect itself. Open the door, redistribute the laundry evenly, and try again.
  3. Drain hose kink. Pull the machine slightly away from the wall and inspect the drain hose at the back. A kink or tight bend will block water from leaving the machine. Straighten the hose and ensure it is not pushed too far into the standpipe.
  4. Pump filter blockage. Most front-load machines have a small access panel at the bottom front. Behind it is a pump filter that traps coins, lint, and debris. Place a towel and a shallow dish underneath, unscrew the filter slowly, and clear any blockage. Check your machine's manual before attempting this.
  5. Power supply. A partial power fault — a tripped breaker or a loose plug — can interrupt a cycle mid-way and prevent spinning. Check your distribution board and ensure the machine is plugged in securely.

Common causes a technician will diagnose

If the checks above do not resolve the fault, the problem is likely internal. Our technicians regularly diagnose and repair the following on both top-load and front-load machines:

  • Worn drive belt — the belt that turns the drum stretches or snaps over time, stopping the spin entirely.
  • Faulty pump motor — a failed pump motor means water cannot be expelled from the drum.
  • Worn carbon brushes — on brush-motor machines, worn brushes cause the drum to spin weakly or not at all.
  • Control board or electronic fault — a faulty control board can interrupt the spin or drain programme and may trigger an error code on the display.

We work on a wide range of brands including Samsung, LG, Defy, Bosch, and Speed Queen, among others. You can see our completed washing machine repairs for examples of the faults we resolve every day.

When DIY stops and professional repair starts

Stop and call a technician if you notice any of the following: burning smell during the cycle, visible water leaking onto the floor, loud grinding or banging from the drum, or an error code that persists after a reset. Attempting to open the machine beyond the filter panel without the right training risks electric shock and can void any remaining warranty.
